Dattum is one of the Challenge Winners at EUvsVirus Hackathon organized by the European Commission. Dattum was ranked Nr. 2 on the Health and Life Challenge → Research.

Dattum Data Intelligence, a cure for the Pandemic

Dattum is a global collaborative ecosystem that facilitates the sourcing of trusted domain-specific data from experts around the world. The immediate focus is to address the COVID-19 pandemic by providing heterogeneous analytics for: treatment schemes, medical experiments, vaccine evolution. Dattum is backed by a business and research consortium of experts in healthcare research, strategy, data privacy and artificial intelligence.

Problem statement

a worldwide crisis in modern times

Since 2003 the world has faced 3 outbreaks caused by coronaviruses. Although the family of coronaviruses is already known by the medical community, the new virus (SARS-CoV-2) is different, aggressive and highly contagious. In a hyperconnected world, the virus spread is following an exponential function and its ability to adapt is almost impossible to predict.

Humankind faces difficulties in reacting properly because of the following reasons:

the current procedures are slow, bureaucratic and inappropriate for such situations

in the recent past, big pharma needed 20 months to produce a vaccine for previous coronaviruses

although the research is heading in the right direction, finding a practical and scalable solution has proven to be extremely difficult

the panic is accelerating and leads to closed borders, interrupted supply chains, overwhelmed healthcare systems, economic and political instability

Current methodology

linear solutions are inefficient for exponential problems

In System Theory, solutions can be determined using analytical calculus (for a reduced number of variables) or statistical modeling (with plenty of samples to infer a general rule). In reality, we face an unfavourable scenario: we have too many variables to consider and not enough data. In this case, an obvious method is to predict (guess) the output and reverse engineer the problem to see if it matches the hypothesis. Right now, on the ground, doctors are doing exactly the same thing: they try to treat the disease using existing medicine and they measure the outcomes.

Advantages

the approach is fast and cost-efficient compared to developing new drugs

the trial and error process is easy to implement

the methodology is approved to be used (in critical situations only)

doctors are counting on their existing experience

Disadvantages

the risk analysis is superficial

the ethic rules are overseen and side effects are being partially ignored (due to time constraints)

the search space is massive and the virus could adapt

the mistakes are replicated (example: WHO needed three months to understand that Ibuprofen was worsening the symptoms)

Solution

A global initiative

The Dattum platform operates as a macro-tool that allows medical teams to coordinate their efforts and obtain faster solutions to problems. By testing more combinations in parallel, a bigger search space can be explored faster. The platform tracks information about the treatment methods (existing and new), medical conditions and the contextual evolution of the virus.

Dattum will run on top of a private permissioned blockchain. The network access is granted through an invitation to all healthcare facilities that are treating or researching COV-19 patients. In this context, data privacy is imperative and all the sensitive information from the platform will go through a data anonymization process. A very intuitive user interface and a standardized format will guide the medical staff to study, insert or edit the data in just a few seconds.
